Section 1.1 – Create a Profile

One of the most effective ways to select a degree is to find one that fits your personality and interests. Consider making a list of strengths, weaknesses, experiences that motivate you, interests, hobbies, types of work environments you would like, certain career paths, ability to relocate for certain opportunities, lifestyle expectations, etc.

Developing an accurate picture of your personal and professional strengths, needs and preferences requires the right assessment tool. FOCUS-2 is an online, self-guided, interactive program, designed to help you select an appropriate major and develop a career plan by identifying your personal interests, values, skills, and personality traits. To participate in this program, visit the FOCUS-2 program self-registration page ( Access Code: apus123 ).

Another way to select a degree plan is to start with the career path you want and work backwards. If you are interested in becoming a preschool teacher, then you should investigate what degrees are best suited for that occupation, such as Early Childhood Care and Education. Certain jobs require specific degrees and others are more flexible. Some jobs require additional certifications or advanced degrees such as a master’s or PhD. It is best to start planning for an intended career and make decisions accordingly. A great resource is the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), published by the U.S. Department of Labor. This free web-based resource contains information about required education, average earnings, working hours required per week, and prospective job outlook for hundreds of jobs.
